Good day friends, relatives, countrymen, visitors new and old…
I recently got a ‘friendly reminder” the I have not posted in some time. Well, cant deny that so here goes. First off, hoping your holiday season was filled with the all the joys of friends, family, and fun times. Here we arrive at the end of the first week of the New Year and still no snow, well aside from that freak of nature in October!!! Records show that it was the first December since 1877 with NO SNOW. Really? Thanks!, No, I mean it…NOT!!! I’m sure all of the consumers, commuters, students, and everyone who works outdoors have been giving thanks for the snow-free conditions, but please, throw us a bone!! Lets have SOME snow, what would winter be without a frosty coating of beautiful, fresh, clean white snowflakes. Awww, c’mon, you know you love it, The kids will be playing with all the winter-themed toys that have just been sitting, forlorn and forgotten, in the back of the garage. You spent a barrel of money on that new snow blower after last seasons storms, don’t you want to put it to good use? And pipe down all of you property managers, you know there’s money in the budget for snow removal and if it doesn’t get used, the powers that be are going to take it away for next season. Then what happens when it decides to snow every week, remember that year? Hmmm, do ya? For those non-believers, Spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere on March 20, 2012, at 1:14 A.M. (EDT). That leaves us about 74 days to get our snow on!!!

Good Day Friends!
Paving Arts Corp. is proud to announce the completion of the Home Depot Parking Lot reconstruction project located on Avery Avenue in Flushing, New York.
This project encompassed the milling and repaving of over 221,000 square feet of asphalt parking lot, including 6,800 square feet of 24 inch deep excavation and proper restoration of a failing utility trench.
The asphalt that was installed was a NY State DOT approved “SuperPave” mix as specified by the project engineers. The concrete was a high strength 5000 psi design mix that should hold up to the rigors of New York traffic for years to come.
Throughout the parking areas, we formed and poured new concrete collars around more than 60 manholes, catch basins, and utility boxes to improve their durability.
In the process of cleaning out a packed catch basin, we encountered a collapsed drain line which was promptly excavated and repaired the very next day prior to the new pavement being installed leaving a seamless finish.
During the completion of the asphalt paving, we installed over 40 new 6″ and 12″ bollards complete with protective poly bollard covers, embedded sign posts, new ADA signage, Truck Parking, and Pro Shop parking signs.
Also involved was the removal and replacement of 3000 SF of concrete sidewalk across the front of the store entranceway. This concrete installation utilized Diamond-Dowel joint reinforcements and PD-3 load basket assemblies from PNA Construction Technologies. These products were engineered into the project to minimize lateral movement while stabilizing the construction joints preventing cracking in the newly poured slabs.
The final phase of the project involved installing all new concrete parking wheel stops and complete new striping of the lot including all parking stalls, ADA compliant handicap parking areas, fire zones across the front of the store, and all traffic control markings throughout the entire parking lot.
Additional miscellaneous work completed during the project included replacing several sections of damaged guardrail, installation of a new flush mounted floor access door assembly, and replacement of an existing damaged traffic island curb.
On a “Greener” note, all asphalt millings and broken concrete that were removed were sent to local facilities that recycle these materials. The striping paint and concrete curing compounds used were both low VOC products. And all drainage structures were protected with Silt-Sacks to eliminate any construction debris entering the waste water stream for the duration of the project. Even the bollard covers play a green role, they remove the need for yearly scraping and painting of the steel bollards which eliminates the use of VOC containing paints and also the disposal of any toxic paint scrapings!
All of this work had to be completed in phases to minimize disruption of the stores retail traffic. This involved heavy use of portable fence systems, lighted traffic barrels, and custom signage directing store patrons to the currently available parking areas. It also involved many early mornings and late evenings to complete the phased work.
We hope you take the time to visit our website, www.pavingarts.com, and browse through the many of photos of this job in progress. You can also check out video clips of the crews at work on www.youtube.com. Just search for “PavingArts” from the main page!
Wishing you all a very happy autumn and a safe holiday season to come.

Welcome back to all of our friends and new visitors.

Paving Arts was recently awarded an asphalt restoration project at the Best Buy & Geek Squad service and distribution center in Perth Amboy, NJ.

The facility was experiencing water coming through fairly new asphalt, and our scope was to excavate and install 375 linear of under-drain to address this problem, as well as to perform approximately 30,000 square feet of mill and pave repairs on the same property.

This project was scheduled to go off at the exact same time as the Fort Hamilton project in Brooklyn which made scheduling tight. Starting work day and night, in 2 different states, on 2 different new projects, as well as working on our ongoing jobs at Adams St in Brooklyn, Kmart in West Long Branch NJ, Sears at Woodbridge Center Mall, as well as another Brooklyn job for The Block Institute which is a developmentally disabled learning center located off of Stillwell Avenue. As of right now Paving Arts has over 15 dump trucks per day and on average 30 employees around the clock.

The sinking feeling I mentioned before was on the Best Buy Project. Let me review…The minute the milling machine hit the ground on the overnight last week, It immediately headed for China!!! I mean sinking like your proverbial box of rocks! Below the asphalt, which was half the depth as the plans stated, we encountered several feet of sloppy, wet clay on which this almost new parking lot was constructed, minimal base, no stone, just orange soup!!!

After extricating our machinery and shoveling off the globs of sticky red clay, we re-laid our plans and change order procedures were established and immediately approved. We had to dig approximately 2 feet down to install 12 inches of new 2” bluestone to re stabilize the soil and then install another 12 inches ¾ road stone as a base. Only then could we reliably re-pave the area with 2” of asphalt base and 2” of asphalt top course. And of course this was all phased and schedules as to minimize any disruption of the Best Buy operation .

Paving Arts is proud to announce that we recently took on a job at Fort Hamilton, right on the Brooklyn side of “the Bridge”.

Paving Arts opened the project by milling approximately 150,000 square feet in one night. Our equipment utilization included two milling machines, 15 Dump trucks, 2 sweepers, 2 skid steer loaders, 1 backhoe, and 1 compressor.

The entire Fort Hamilton project encompasses approximately 250,000 square feet total, with 150,000 square feet of 2” mill and pave and 40,500 square feet of 8″ removal with replacement of 4” stone, 2” asphalt base, and 2” of asphalt top. Also included is replacement of Thermoplastic lot and lane markings.

This project is governed by a strict schedule and has to be complete within 8 days.

As of right now we are ahead of schedule and continue to schedule work phases which allow the Fort Facilities to remain accessible.

Check out our Websites “Photos” section for some images of the first night’s milling activities.

Hello Again Friends:

The fall season is upon us. A perfect time to consider any parking lot and asphalt maintenance and repairs that need to be made prior to the holiday rush and the onset of another one of our famous New York Area winters!

Today we offer up some insight on sealcoating. Please read on to learn some interesting facts about how sealcoating asphalt adds value and life to your investment as well as beautifying the parking lot to make a great first impression to your customers and tenants.

Parking lot maintenance with sealcoat usually means a two to four year cycle of sealcoating which prolongs the original pavement’s life as well as ensuring the appearance of your property. By implementing a regular consistent parking lot maintenance program, a property owner can reliably and accurately budget for parking lot maintenance expenses.

The benefits to consistent parking lot maintenance are clear:

Protecting your asphalt pavement investment

Sealcoating slows down oxidation and water penetration, blocking out natural elements such as, sun, wind, and rain

Sealcoating resists harmful man made element spills such as fuel, antifreeze, oil, and salt.

Asphalt sealer fills small voids in asphalt reducing exposure to oxygen and water and extending pavement life.

A well maintained lot is easy to navigate avoiding serious liability issues to tenants, guests and customers

Sealcoating on older pavements replaces fine particles lost from the asphalt surface due to oxidation.

A clean dark well maintained lot will actually help to beautify the landscape and appearance

Plus – save more than 48% over unmaintained pavement over the life of the lot

Sealcoating cost pennies a square foot compared to the dollars needed to repair or replace asphalt.

Sealcoating protects your investment, extending the life of your asphalt, saving you money in the long run.

A dark black parking lot with beautiful crisp bright striping and marking offers a positive image of how clean a company, or business is.

The Savings

Unmaintained (or unsealed) asphalt pavement will likely require repairs after the first two years. The simple fact is that the porous nature of asphalt will allow water to penetrate to the sub-base, eroding it and beginning the cycle of repairs. Furthermore, this unmaintained surface may require overlay as early as seven years, versus fifteen years for a maintained parking area. According to a study performed by Girish C. Dubey, chairperson of the Pavement Coatings Technology Center at the University of Nevada at Reno, maintaining asphalt pavement with sealcoat every three years saves an average of $15.25 per square yard or $152,500.00 for a parking lot averaging 10,000 square yards. This translates into more than 48% in savings over unmaintained asphalt. Maintaining asphalt with sealcoat is a small expense that secures nearly 300% increase in asphalt life as well as the aforementioned maintenance cost savings.

Parking lot maintenance is most economical when consistently performed from the outset. However, it is never too late to implement a maintenance plan that will optimize your current pavement’s condition and prolong its life. Paving Arts Corp. can repair any existing damage and protect the pavement from further damage.

Contact us today to find out how Paving Arts Corp. can save you thousands by properly maintaining your asphalt pavement for years to come.

First I want to thank all of you for continuing to select Paving Arts as your preferred vendor.

And to all of our new customers and friends, welcome to our Blog!

Some new additions to our fleet to announce here.

Paving Arts recently purchased a Brand New Caterpillar A19B Auger Attachment for our skid steer loaders.

It was ordered complete with 12″ and 18″ auger bits and was put right to work at our ongoing project at The Home Depot in Flushing Queens. This new machine speeds up the excavation for installing bollards and guardrail posts tremendously. It is a welcome addition to our fleet and will surely pay for itself in gained productivity in short order.

The second new addition was a Brand New Caterpillar H65D-S Hydraulic Hammer attachment, again for our skid steer loaders.

This nearly 600 pound attachment puts the power to the ground with 700 ft/lbs of impact energy and an impressive range of 700 to 2000 impacts per minute. Again, it was put right to its task at the Home Depot project and has happily been smashing concrete and loosening fillings ever since!!!

Hope your upcoming Labor Day weekend brings relaxation and enjoyment for friends and family, one and all.

Enjoy the remainder of the warm weather this season.

Pretty soon we will be stuffing the Turkey and then thoughts the Holiday Season will be upon us.

…and then our thoughts will be turning to Snow Removal!!!

…Love That Powdered Sunshine!!!

We are sending this email to all hoping everyone is safe from the hurricane that just passed through the east coast. We at Paving Arts were very busy on this past Sunday providing emergency service to approximately 15 clients, providing property evaluations, clean up of debris, and pumping of flooded out basements, loading docks, and storm drains. We want to thank our clients for the work and we look forward to servicing you in the future. So everyone knows Paving Arts is a 24/7 emergency service provider for all commercial facilities. In the case of future emergencies, if there is anything we can ever do to help anyone, please feel free to contact us at any time!

Hello Again friends!

First I want to thank all of you for continuing to select Paving Arts as your preferred vendor.

We hope that our services are well beyond your satisfaction and we are always looking for insight on what you may feel we can be doing better.

I will be sending out some information within the next couple of weeks regarding a new customer referral and rewards program which will provide incentives to any client that recommends new business to Paving Arts, but more on that later !!!!

Our first project I want to show you is the rehabilitation of the entire parking lot at the Home Depot in Flushing NY. Those of you familiar with the store know the traffic volume it generates! Our greatest challenge here is phasing the project to maximize available customer parking and minimizing the disruption to the store.

Our scope of work is as follows.

Mill and pave 221,000 SF of NYS DOT Spec “Superpave” asphalt, pour 3000 SF of new concrete sidewalk in front of the entrance ways , form and pour over 60 new concrete collars around all manholes, catch basins, and utility boxes. Restore a pre-existing utility trench that had begun to fail, excavate approximately 6,800 SF to a depth of 24” , install GlasPave8512 geogrid fabric to stabilize the area. Install over 40 new 6” and 12” bollards with poly bollard covers, new ADA signage, truck parking, and pro shop parking signs , last but not least install all new concrete wheel-stops and re stripe the entire lot. This project was started on August 15th and as of today August 29th , we are 50% complete . We are scheduled for approximate 15 men on this site daily and our estimated completion date is September 9th.

The second project I want to share is the Enterprise Rent-A-Car lot located off busy North Avenue in Elizabeth New Jersey. This recently completed project was a 165,000 SF parking lot . Our scope of work was to re-grade the existing sub base, install new stone, and placed 2500 tons of asphalt, all within in 5 working days.

Stay tuned for more info regarding a recently completed K-Mart parking lot in West Long Branch NJ, and a FedEx project we have underway in Newark NJ!

We have videos of these projects posted on our YouTube channel for your viewing pleasure!

With handling over 35 sites and 25 of them in Brooklyn NY alone where NYC Sanitation lost control, Paving Arts not only successfully handled our locations, but helped at various other sites when un-equipped snow contractors dropped the dime.

Paving Arts has now signed 3 new large retail facilities in Brooklyn due to its immediate action provided to a distressed customer.

Mike Piazza VP says this is due to having the most up to date equipment with a great maintenance plan, strategic planning and proper plow procedures. And of course a dedicated work force!

Mike Piazza and his partners Tim Lubniewski and Shawn Hartnett want to thank their employees for the hard work and dedication to the company, and to you, our valued customers!
